Drywall Finishing

Expert taping, mudding, and sanding for flawless, paint-ready walls and ceilings.

The Difference Is in the Details

Drywall finishing is where craftsmanship truly shows. Poor finishing means visible seams, bumpy surfaces, and walls that look amateur even after painting. Our finishing work is meticulous. We take the time to build up joints properly, sand to perfection, and deliver surfaces that are truly ready for paint or wallpaper.

Whether you need finishing for new construction, a remodel, or a repair, we offer the full range of finish levels from Level 3 (suitable for texture) to Level 5 (the smoothest finish possible for critical lighting conditions).

What Sets Us Apart

Multiple coats with proper drying time
Precision sanding between coats
Quality joint compound and tape
Surfaces ready for any paint sheen
What We Offer

Understanding Drywall Finish Levels

Different projects require different finish levels. Here's what each level means.

L3

Level 3 Finish

Tape embedded in compound with one additional coat. Best for areas that will receive heavy texture. Common in garages, warehouses, and utility spaces.

L4

Level 4 Finish

Tape plus two additional coats of compound, sanded smooth. The standard for most residential and commercial spaces. Ready for texture or flat/eggshell paint.

L5

Level 5 Finish

Level 4 plus a skim coat over the entire surface. The highest quality finish, required for gloss paint, critical lighting, or when you want perfect walls.

Taping & Mudding

Expert application of joint tape and compound at all seams, corners, and fastener heads. We use paper tape for most joints and metal corner bead for outside corners.

Precision Sanding

Careful sanding between coats and final sanding for smooth surfaces. We use proper techniques to avoid over-sanding and scuffing the paper face.

Skim Coating

Full-surface coating for Level 5 finish or to smooth out rough existing walls. Creates a uniform surface for critical lighting and high-gloss paints.

First Coat (Tape Coat)

We embed paper tape in all flat joints and apply corner bead to outside corners. Fastener heads receive their first coat. This coat is about adhesion.

Second Coat (Fill Coat)

After the tape coat dries, we apply a wider coat to fill and blend the joints. This coat starts building the smooth transition.

Third Coat (Finish Coat)

A final wide coat feathers the joints out further. For Level 5, we apply a skim coat over the entire surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about drywall finishing in Madison, WI.

01
What is a Level 5 drywall finish?
Level 5 is the highest quality drywall finish. It includes all the steps of Level 4 (taping, three coats of compound, sanding) plus a skim coat over the entire surface. It creates a glass-smooth wall that looks flawless even under gloss paint or harsh lighting. It costs more but eliminates any visible joints or texture variation.
02
Do I need Level 5 finish or is Level 4 enough?
Level 4 is the standard for most residential spaces painted with flat or eggshell paint. Level 5 is recommended when you plan to use semi-gloss or gloss paint, when walls will be under raking light (like a hallway with windows at one end), or when you want the smoothest possible result. We help you decide during the free estimate.
03
How many coats of mud does drywall finishing require?
Proper finishing requires at least three coats: a tape coat to embed the joint tape, a fill coat to build up the joint, and a finish coat to feather and blend. Each coat must dry completely (typically 24 hours) before the next, which is why finishing takes several days.
04
Can you finish drywall that another crew hung?
Yes, we regularly finish drywall hung by other crews or homeowners. We inspect the hanging first — if we find issues like protruding screws, gaps, or damaged edges, we address those before finishing so you get a quality result.
